Ironbound Multicultural Festival
The name “Ironbound” derives from the metalworking industry in the area and from the network or railroad tracks that surround the neighborhood.
Today, the Ironbound is known for being a multi-cultural neighborhood. Even though Portuguese roots in the area run deep, the Ironbound is home to one of the most diverse and vibrant communities. Galician, Ecuadorian and, most recently Brazilian immigrants followed the footsteps of the Portuguese and settled, in large numbers, in the Ironbound over the recent years. The neighborhood has a mix of different home styles as many old industrial sites have been converted to modern detached townhouses.
It is with the intent to celebrate the dynamic and vibrant cultural community of the Ironbound that we are promoting the festival. From September 20 to 29, 2013; homegrown artists of every background will come together at the Prospect St. Firehouse and will showcase the dynamic and diverse community we call home. On Sunday, September 29, 2013; at the Sport Club Portuguese, there will be a music festival with the participation of several of the most known groups in the community.
The Ironbound Multicultural Festival is being created to promote and highlight the cultural strength of the neighborhood. It is designed to point out the cultural richness of a community known, mostly, for its restaurants and well-kept homes, located along and around Ferry Street.
